How to clean your jeans properly?

Some people swear that you should wash your favorite jeans only by hand. Others say you shouldn't wash them at all. But most of us just throw the staple food in this closet into the washing machine together with the rest of our clothes, without thinking.

So what is the best practice? We have tested various denim fabrics and detergents in our Good Housekeeping Institute cleaning and textile laboratory. We recommend that you wash the denim every three to four times to keep the basic dark blue and black jeans clean and fit. , And look for new ones for as long as possible.

The best way to wash jeans:

No matter how old or new, you should always turn your jeans over before putting them in the washing machine. This helps minimize wear and tear that can cause fading and possible wear along the edges of the hem, pockets, placket, and waistband. It is also important to zip up and fasten buttons and snaps-this will help maintain the shape of the jeans and prevent hooking on other items.

For ripped jeans with frayed hem or ripped holes, use clips such as Sock Cops to clamp the openings or edges together. These clever clips are designed to keep the socks paired during washing, and can also help prevent denim from wearing more than you expect. (If your jeans are really torn, it would be better to wash them by hand.)

Use detergents designed to preserve colors, such as 👆Woolite Darks liquid laundry detergent or Tide Studio Darks and Colors. They contain ingredients that help fabrics retain dyes and deactivate chlorine that fades in water. Finally, it is best to wash the jeans in cold water within a short period of time.

More tips for washing denim:

Avoid filling up washing machines and dryers. The more times the clothes are loaded, the faster the washing speed, but the greater the degree of wear of the fabric. Without space for movement, zippers and rivets may jam, and sutures may break. Your clothes should be able to circulate or tumble freely so that they can be thoroughly cleaned and dried and will not come out of the machine in a tangled manner.

Separate light and dark jeans. You may think that it is safe to wash all the jeans together at once, but it is safe to do so, and extra dye is usually applied to dark denim to make it look dark, but it may transfer to light-colored fabrics . It is best to wash and dry them separately. When wearing new dark jeans, be careful when carrying light-colored wallets or sitting on light-colored interiors. The erased color may not be able to be removed from these other items. Test for any color loss by rubbing a piece of white cloth on new ultra-dark or black jeans (this is called rubbing). If so, please consider washing it once or twice before wearing it.
