Regular cleaning will keep your shoes in their best appearance (and smell). Here is how to clean shoes without damaging them.

Supplies

dish detergent

baking soda

Magic eraser (optional)

Leather conditioner (optional)

White vinegar (optional)

tool

shoe brush

toothbrush

Soft clean cloth

Suede brush (optional)

If the shoes are not cleaned regularly, it is difficult to keep the shoes in their original condition. As soon as these new sneakers are out of the box, you will want to wear them outside-where they will get dust, dirt, wear and stains.

To ensure that your sports shoes maintain their best performance for a long time, we recommend that you carry out proper care and maintenance, including cleaning. Before you begin, place the shoes on a shoe rack or fill the shoes with crumpled newspaper to help maintain their shape during the cleaning process. Then, start working.

These tips will help you keep any sneakers and running shoes fresh and clean in a few simple steps.

How to clean your shoes step by step

1. Use a dry brush

Use a dry soft brush to remove loose dirt from the outsole, midsole, and upper. No shoe brush? No problem, the old toothbrush works well.

2. Make a mild cleaning solution

Mix warm water with a small amount of mild washing powder or detergent.

For white and light-colored shoes, you can also mix equal amounts of baking soda and water to make an effective cleansing cream.

3. Hand wash shoelaces

Remove the shoelaces and apply a small amount of mild cleaning fluid on them. Massage the laces with your hands, rinse them, and then dry them with a soft cloth.

4. Wash the soles

Apply the mild solution to a soft bristle brush, toothbrush, or towel. Thoroughly clean the outsole and midsole, and take time to clean every part of the sole. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Note: If you need to clean the insoles, please remove them first and clean them with a solution, making sure to allow them time to dry before putting them back in the shoes.

5. Wash and dry the upper

Use a mild solution and a soft brush, toothbrush or soft damp cloth to clean the upper. Take your time and don't scrub too hard.

If you are satisfied with the appearance, use a dry microfiber towel or soft cloth to soak up and remove as much soapy water and dirt as possible. If necessary, please repeat. Try to avoid drying by friction, as it will abrade the shoe material or spread any remaining small pieces of dirt.

6. Air dry

Air dry your sneakers at room temperature. Before the next exercise or activity wear, please make sure to let your shoes completely dry. For most shoes, it takes at least 8 hours to dry completely.

Before cleaning the shoes with the cleaning fluid, be sure to use a shoe brush or toothbrush to remove loose dirt.

Special considerations for different materials

Following these basic cleaning steps will ensure that sneakers are clean, but some fabrics and materials may require a little extra TLC. Here is what you need to know about using cleaners for different types of shoes.

How to clean leather shoes

Leather shoes are easy to get dirty, so regular cleaning is very important. In addition to using a dry brush and a mild detergent solution, you may also need to use a magic eraser or leather conditioner to remove stains. Don't polish your shoes too hard, otherwise the leather may be damaged.

How to clean suede shoes

Suede is notoriously difficult to clean. If you notice water marks, wear marks, dirt or stains, it may be time to properly clean your suede shoes. Use these recommended techniques and special tools to get the job done. That's it.

Use a suede brush or towel to wipe off surface debris and work in the same direction as the material, not against the texture.

Use suede rubber (or pencil eraser) to wipe off any traces on the surface of the shoe.

For stubborn stains, use a cloth dipped in white vinegar to scrub the fabric in alternating directions.

How to clean knitted shoes

Nike Flyknit shoes provide flexible support where you need it most, but the fabric is delicate and you need to be careful when using cleaners. Use chemical-free soap to make a mild soapy water solution. Do not use bleach or other harsh cleaning products as they will damage the material. Take a clean cloth and wipe the solution in the same direction as the knitted fabric.
